A Unique Exhibition of Monumental Sculpture
Experience the powerful and thought-provoking art of Stephen Cox at Houghton Hall. “Stephen Cox: Myth” presents a major exhibition of the acclaimed British sculptor’s work, displayed throughout the magnificent park, gardens, and interiors of this historic stately home. Spanning over 40 years of Cox’s career, the exhibition features monumental sculptures in stone and marble, alongside smaller, more intimate pieces. This is the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of his work to date.
Cox’s sculptures draw inspiration from diverse cultures and ancient civilizations, particularly Egypt and India. His works often explore themes of mythology, religion, and the relationship between humanity and the natural world. Using traditional carving techniques, Cox transforms materials like marble, alabaster, and porphyry into striking forms that resonate with both ancient and contemporary sensibilities. He was also the first artist in centuries to gain access to the Imperial Porphyry Quarries in Egypt, highlighting the unique nature of his work.
Between Art and History
The setting of Houghton Hall, a masterpiece of Palladian architecture built in the 1720s for Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, creates a fascinating dialogue with Cox’s modern sculptures. The juxtaposition of the artist’s often monolithic and atavistic forms against the opulent interiors and carefully curated landscapes of Houghton Hall offers a unique and inspiring experience. This creates a subtle connection across the centuries, that both Kent and his patron, Sir Robert Walpole would surely have appreciated.
Explore Houghton Hall and its Grounds
Beyond the Stephen Cox exhibition, a visit to Houghton Hall offers a chance to explore a significant piece of British history and architecture. The house itself, with its grand state rooms and William Kent’s original 18th-century interiors, is a work of art in its own right. The surrounding park and gardens, including works by other contemporary artists such as James Turrell, add to the experience.
